Beehive Kilns
2025
Consisting of 2 tiled works of equal size, Beehive Kilns (each with a respective full title) depicts Prestongrange’s titular tile kilns.
Originally 11 in total, the circular beehive kilns produced much of Prestongrange Brick and Tile Works’ pottery and earthenware pieces. The kilns were demolished shortly after the closure of the works, leaving behind large rings of brick embedded in the ground.
Beehive Kilns employs cyanotype on tile to print an archival photograph of the kilns at Prestongrange in 1966 as taken by Professor John R. Hume. The second work shows an image taken in 2025, from exactly the same angle, showing the emptiness of the site today.
This work was commissioned by Generator Projects, Dundee, as part of their annual They Had 4 Years exhibition in 2025. The work was shown alongside 4 other commissioned artists, Jungyoon Im, Olivia Margaret Frances, Theodora Koumbouzis and Kristina Gondova. Exhibition imagery by Sam Davies.
